MindUP: This year, we will continue learning MindUP lessons together as a class. MindUP teaches social and emotional learning skills that link cognitive neuroscience, positive psychology and mindful awareness training utilizing a brain centric approach. MindUP is a research-based training program for educators and children. This program is composed of 15 lessons based in neuroscience. Students learn to self-regulate behavior and mindfully engage in focused concentration required for academic success. MindUP lessons align with all state standards including Common Core and support improved academic performance while enhancing perspective taking, empathy and kindness as well as fostering complex problem solving skills. Daily Calm: Calm’s mission is to make the world happier and healthier. Calm is best known as a meditation, sleep and mental wellness app, available in both the App Store and Google Play store. Calm creates unique audio content that strengthens mental fitness and tackles some of the biggest mental health challenges of today: stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression. In addition to our Mind Up curriculum, we will begin using this App in class also! We will do the 10-minute meditation called, 'The Daily Calm,' that explores a new mindful theme and inspiring concept each day. If this is something your child likes or you think is something you would like to continue at home, the Calm app is free to download but you do need a paid subscription in order to access. They also have a published book, the Calm Book. Many of our students show anxiety and stress, even at this young age, especially now during the global pandemic. We want to help them develop self-regulation skills that will help them reduce stress in order to feel calm and happy!
